A wage and income transcript shows information returns the IRS received from third parties reporting payments to you, such as Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 and 5498. Request it through your Individual Online Account or by mail using Form 4506-T to verify reported income against your own records. The transcript is limited to approximately 85 income documents and may be incomplete compared with documents actually issued to you. It is not a tax account transcript showing your return data or account changes, and does not prove refund status or filing duty.

What the Wage and Income Transcript Contains

The wage and income transcript lists information returns IRS received from payers, employers, financial institutions and other third parties. Common document types include:

The transcript shows the payer name, payer identification number, document type and reported amounts. It does not include every source of income you must report. Cash payments, certain business income and income from sources that did not file an information return with IRS may not appear. The transcript is not a complete inventory of your taxable income.

How to Request a Wage and Income Transcript

Individuals can request a wage and income transcript through two official channels:

Individual Online Account: Sign in to your IRS online account and select the wage and income transcript for the tax year you need. Generally available for the current year and nine prior tax years, subject to conditions. Online availability follows the current official route; availability and document limits can prevent generation.

Form 4506-T: Complete and submit Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, checking the wage and income transcript box and specifying the tax year or years. Mail the signed form to the address listed in the instructions for your state. Follow the current Form 4506-T instructions for address and identity verification requirements.

Official IRS transcript service is free. If you need a third party to access your wage and income information, they must have your authorization on Form 2848 or Form 8821, specifying the tax type, form and year or period for which they can receive information.

The 85-Document Limit and Incomplete Information

The wage and income transcript is limited to approximately 85 income documents. If payers filed more than 85 information returns reporting payments to you in a single tax year, the transcript may not generate through the online channel. When the document count exceeds the online capacity, IRS directs you to request the transcript using Form 4506-T.

The transcript can be incomplete for several reasons:

If you request a current-year wage and income transcript and receive a message stating "No record of return filed," that message refers to the wage and income information, not your individual income tax return. It means wage and income information for that year may not yet be populated in the system. It is not proof that you did not file a Form 1040 or that you have no filing duty.

Do not rely on the wage and income transcript as a complete list of all income you must report. Compare the transcript against the actual Forms W-2, 1099 and other documents you received. If a document you received does not appear on the transcript, report the income using your records.

Document Reconciliation Table

Document Type Transcript Status Your Records Next Step
W-2 wages Matches your W-2 Received, amount confirmed Use for return preparation
1099-NEC Missing from transcript Received from payer Report income from your copy; contact payer if concerned about their filing
1099-INT Amount differs Your statement shows different total Contact bank to confirm correct amount; use accurate figure
1099-DIV Appears on transcript Not received by mail Request duplicate from payer; use transcript amount if payer confirms
1099-G unemployment Appears on transcript You did not receive unemployment Contact issuing agency; may be identity theft or error
1099-R distribution Matches your record Received, amount confirmed Use for return preparation; check code and taxable amount

This table uses generic categories for illustration. Your reconciliation should address every information return you received and every entry on your transcript.

Checking Against Your Records

When you receive your wage and income transcript, compare each listed document against the statements you received:

  1. Match each W-2 on the transcript to your employer copy. Verify wages, federal withholding and employer identification number.
  2. Match each 1099 form on the transcript to your payer copy. Verify amounts, payer name and any backup withholding.
  3. Identify any document on the transcript you did not receive. Request a duplicate from the payer or investigate whether the payment was made to you.
  4. Identify any document you received that does not appear on the transcript. Report the income using your records.
  5. Resolve discrepancies with the payer before filing your return when possible.

The wage and income transcript is a tool for verifying third-party reporting. It does not replace your own recordkeeping. Keep your original Forms W-2, 1099 and other information returns with your tax records.

Differences from Other Transcripts

The wage and income transcript is not the same as a tax account transcript. A tax account transcript shows your filed return information, payment activity and account changes. It does not list individual W-2 or 1099 forms. If you need to verify your account balance, refund status or IRS adjustments, request a tax account transcript instead.

The wage and income transcript also does not show whether you filed a return, the status of your refund or your current account balance. It is strictly a list of information returns IRS received from third parties. For refund or account questions, check your tax account transcript or use the IRS "Where's My Refund?" tool.

If an IRS notice references a discrepancy between your return and information the IRS has on file, compare the notice to both your wage and income transcript and your filed return. Notices may reference transaction codes like 570 or 971 on your account transcript, but those codes do not appear on a wage and income transcript. Use each transcript type for its intended purpose.

FAQ

What if my wage and income transcript shows a 1099 I never received?

Contact the payer listed on the transcript to confirm the payment and request a copy of the 1099. If the payer confirms they issued the form and made the payment, report the income on your return. If you believe the 1099 was issued in error or involves identity theft, contact the payer to request a corrected form and follow IRS identity theft procedures if necessary. Do not ignore income reported to the IRS.

Can I use the wage and income transcript instead of keeping my W-2 and 1099 forms?

No. The wage and income transcript may be incomplete, may not show all details you need for your return and is subject to the 85-document limit. Keep your original Forms W-2, 1099 and other information returns with your tax records. The transcript is a verification tool, not a replacement for your own documents.

Why does my current-year wage and income transcript say no record of return filed?

That message on a wage and income transcript means wage and income information for the requested year may not yet be populated in IRS systems. It is not a statement about your Form 1040 or your filing obligation. Information returns are filed by payers on different schedules, and current-year data may be incomplete when you request the transcript early in the filing season. If you need to confirm whether IRS received your individual income tax return, check your tax account transcript instead.

For tax firms

Wage and income transcript reconciliation is part of preparing accurate returns and responding to IRS notices that reference unreported income. A firm may compare third-party reports with a client’s own records. Account entries such as code 570 or 971 are separate evidence; neither code alone diagnoses unreported income. Authorization through Form 2848 or Form 8821 allows your firm to request and receive wage and income transcripts on behalf of clients for the specified tax years.
